Don’t be tricked into a bad nights sleep

Halloween is an exciting time of year for children (and adults!). The costumes, the treats, the decorations and the fun! However, if you’re a parent with a little one, you might be wondering how you can enjoy the festivities without disrupting your little one’s sleep routine?

The good news is, with a little planning, you can soak up the spooky season and keep sleep on track. Here are my top tips:

1. Stick to your usual bedtime (as much as possible)

Halloween events often start in the evening but your baby doesn’t know it’s a special night. Try to keep their bedtime routine and sleep schedule consistent. If you’re attending an event, consider going early so you can be home in time for winding down.

2. Protect the bedtime routine

Bath, book, cuddle, feed. Do whatever your little one is used to and keep it the same. These familiar steps signal ‘sleep time’ no matter what’s happening outside. Even if you arrive home a little later than usual, run through your normal routine to help your baby settle.

3. Plan around Trick-or-Treaters

Doorbells, knocks and excited voices can be very disruptive for light sleepers. If you know trick-or-treaters will be visiting, consider leaving a bowl of sweets outside your door. This way, your baby’s sleep isn’t interrupted by constant noise at the door.

4. Be mindful with costumes

If you’re dressing your baby up, (who can resist those adorable baby pumpkins?) make sure the outfit is comfy, breathable and easy to remove. Avoid scratchy fabrics or accessories that could keep them awake later.

5. Manage stimulation and excitement

Halloween decorations, flashing lights and new faces can be overwhelming. If your baby seems overstimulated, build in some quiet time before bed. Dim the lights, play soft music and let them unwind.

6. Adjust expectations

Sometimes despite our best efforts, special occasions do throw routines off. That’s okay! A late bedtime or a shorter nap on one day won’t undo all your hard work. Get back on track the following day, and your little one will quickly readjust.

Final Thought
Halloween can be magical, even with a baby in tow. By protecting sleep where you can, staying flexible and planning ahead, you’ll be able to make the most of the celebrations without sacrificing those precious Zzz’s.

Sweet dreams (and plenty of treats for you!).
